Shushihuiyao described him as "creating characters with extraordinary and dynamic forms, skilled in running and cursive scripts. Zhao Wenmin highly praised him." Wu Kuan commented on his calligraphy: "Xian Yu's reputation in calligraphy was equal to that of Zhao Wuxing and Deng Baishi in his time, each dominating their respective fields. Kunxue was particularly skilled in cursive scripts, and his calligraphy derived from regular and running scripts, so his brushwork was deliberate, and every stroke carried a sense of character, making it pleasing to the eye."
