Features: Ancient Chinese seals have a long history; they evolved from practical social functions to the appreciated art of seal carving, with a rich and profound heritage. This book primarily focuses on eras, supplemented by seal carving events and figures, combining historical analysis with comprehensive and systematic explanations of the different characteristics of seal carving in various historical periods from the Qin Dynasty to the early Republic of China (early 20th century). The history of Chinese seal carving is long-standing and rich in content. A history of Chinese seal carving actually includes three aspects:
1. The history of seals, mainly including the uses, names, inscriptions, materials, forms, and institutional evolution of seals;
2. The history of seal carving art, primarily referring to the artistic process of seals, including the development and changes of seal carving techniques (seal script, composition, and cutting methods) during the printing process, as well as the continuous expansion and refinement of the artistic content of seals;
3. The history of seal studies, mainly including the theoretical exploration and research achievements of seals, seal carving, and seal carving art throughout history.
These three aspects are distinct yet interconnected, with more overlap and mutual influence, driving the development of Chinese seal carving art.
