What are the treatments for biliary atresia?

Patient's question:

My child is six months old. The doctor diagnosed him with biliary atresia, and we were terrified. We never had this problem before, and all the tests were fine. Could you please tell me about the treatment for biliary atresia?

Doctor's answer:

So far, children with congenital biliary atresia do not necessarily survive, because conservative treatment is not realistic and cannot be cured, nor can it reverse the disease. The only treatment plan available is surgery. The surgery depends on the scope and type of biliary atresia. The most radical treatment is liver transplantation, which gives hope that a new liver can replace the old one and re-establish an intrahepatic and extrahepatic biliary system, allowing the child to survive. If liver transplantation is not performed, only some anastomosis surgeries between bile ducts and intestines are done, and the efficacy is not as certain. If there is also intrahepatic bile duct obstruction, it is not suitable for bile-intestine anastomosis surgery.
