What types of biliary atresia are there and how to identify them?

Patient's question:

My baby has been diagnosed with biliary atresia. What is type 3 biliary atresia? What stage is my baby at? And will the child be fine after surgery? How can I determine the type of biliary atresia?

Doctor's answer:

The anatomical conditions of extrahepatic biliary atresia can generally be classified into the following types.
Type 1: Complete atresia of the hepatic duct, gallbladder, bile duct, and common bile duct.
Type 2: The gallbladder has a space, while all other extrahepatic bile ducts are atretic.
Type 3: The gallbladder, gallbladder duct, and common bile duct have spaces, and the hepatic duct is atretic. The above three types account for 80-90% of cases of biliary atresia.
Type 4: The upper segment of the hepatic duct is intact, while the lower segment is atretic, and the gallbladder duct and common bile duct are also atretic.
Type 5: The hepatic duct, gallbladder, and gallbladder duct are intact, while the common bile duct is atretic.
Type 6: The hepatic duct, bile duct, gallbladder duct, and upper segment of the common bile duct are intact, with only the lower segment of the common bile duct atretic.
