Features: The Sorrows of Young Werther is the masterpiece of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a great German eighteenth-century literary figure and thinker. This epistolary novel became popular worldwide upon its publication and has been a must-read classic for young lovers for over 200 years, sparking a series of "Werther fever." The protagonist, Werther, is an immortal artistic figure. He is sensitive, passionate, and cynical. The story takes place from May 1771 to December 1772, with a simple plot: Werther is a poet and painter who loves nature and is deeply emotional. On a day in early spring, he leaves his family and friends to come to a picturesque and secluded mountain village, where he develops a strong interest in the local natural scenery and simple life. Everything here is like paradise: green mountains, secluded valleys, morning and evening mist, and village children—feeling as if he were living in a utopia, he forgets all his troubles.
Soon after, at a ball, Werther meets Charlotte, the daughter of a local judge, and falls deeply in love with her. Although Charlotte feels a connection with Werther at first sight, she is already engaged and cannot return his love. When Charlotte's fiancé, Albert, returns from abroad, Werther is thrown into an even more awkward and painful situation. Finally, after his friends persuade him, he decides to leave the beloved Charlotte and the small mountain village that once brought him joy and happiness.
Werther returns to the city and becomes a clerk in the embassy. He tries his best to adapt to the job, but his officious boss nitpicks at his work and constantly gives him a hard time. His colleagues also treat him with suspicion, all of which causes him great distress. Once, Werther accidentally enters a nobleman's salon, where the "honorable" gentlemen and ladies would rather leave than attend with someone of his low status. Humiliated, Werther resigns in anger.
Having faced repeated failures in society and career, Werther loses all hope for the future and completely follows his emotions. He returns to Charlotte and becomes even more entangled in the whirlpool of love, unable to escape. Caught between a rock and a hard place, Charlotte finally decides to distance herself from Werther and persuade him to give up his love for her. On the eve of Christmas, she reads Ossian's poems with Werther, and passion overcomes reason. They embrace tightly.
After Charlotte comes to her senses, her heart is in turmoil and fear. She tells Werther that they can never meet again. Unable to bear it any longer, Werther writes a final letter to Charlotte and takes his own life by gunshot.
Which girl doesn't long for love, which boy doesn't fall in love? The Sorrows of Young Werther depicts a passionate yet tragic love story, but it is more than just a love novel. The protagonist, Werther, is a young man from an ordinary family who yearns for a life of freedom, equality, and creativity, hoping to engage in meaningful practical work. However, he is surrounded by class prejudice and ignorant social customs. The conservative and corrupt bureaucracy, the vulgar and submissive citizens, and the snobbish nobles make him feel suffocated.
At the same time, he is trapped in a hopeless love, and finally takes the path of suicide. The conflict between Werther and society carries strong anti-feudal significance. Through Werther's tragedy, the novel exposes and criticizes many unreasonable realities of German society at the time, expressing the revolutionary ideas of a generation of awakening German youth. Werther's tragedy is not just a personal tragedy but also represents the pain and reflection of the era.
