Features: To help this group of adult learners fulfill their dream of learning English, I began using supplementary materials in the first 16 classes, incorporating essential elements such as letters, phonetics, sentence structures, vocabulary, dialogues, and grammar points that beginners should master. This allowed them to catch up on the necessary knowledge while studying with other learners, reducing confusion and guiding them on where to start learning English. These materials accompanied me through two years of teaching, constantly being used, critiqued, and revised by my students. Through my teaching practice, I witnessed the help these materials provided to the learners, and in fact, these supplementary notes became the preliminary draft of this book.
With the launch of the Guangzhou Zero-Start English class, these notes gradually transformed into the textbook for the class. Despite being just a few simple pages and having many imperfections, they did not diminish the enthusiasm of adult learners for English. The number of students in the Zero-Start class grew from 10 to 50, and then to 100. From the Xindongfang in Guangzhou to Shanghai, Chengdu, and Changsha, these materials were adopted as textbooks for zero-start classes, teaching those passionate adult beginners. Countless additions and revisions led me to finally decide, at the beginning of this year, to compile them into a true, audio-equipped textbook as a gift to my students. It may not be the best, but I believe every part of the textbook is essential for every beginner, as it has been validated through the learning experiences of countless students. Almost every section of this book was compiled based on the demands of my students, such as the mouth diagrams included in the book. These were added based on the understanding that adult learners tend to have weaker visual memory but stronger comprehension, using my own mouth as a template. Although these diagrams are not aesthetically pleasing, the students needed them.
