Features: This book is compiled in accordance with the new 2004 syllabus. Compared to other vocabulary memorization books, it has two significant characteristics:
1. Systematic, comprehensive, and focused vocabulary selection. The book is divided into three major sections: Basic Vocabulary covers easier-to-learn words, listing only phonetic transcriptions, part of speech, and key definitions; In-depth Vocabulary focuses on high-frequency words for exams, with sections on example sentences, collocations, links, usage tips, and differentiation, helping students systematically and comprehensively grasp key and difficult points, achieving time-saving, effort-saving, and efficient learning; Appendices include a "Prefix Table," "Irregular Verb Table," "Spelling Differences between British and American Usage," and scenario-based common words.
2. Precise and practical vocabulary explanations to aid in associative memorization. Example sentences are primarily sourced from past English Majors' Proficiency Test papers (including the latest 2004 exam), with a small portion from College English Tests Band 4/6 and postgraduate entrance exams, allowing students to warm up in a real-world atmosphere, master relevant usage, and gain practical experience. Usage tips highlight common pitfalls in vocabulary use, involving numerous key points in grammar, helping students deepen their understanding of grammar while memorizing words. Differentiation is the cornerstone of the book, breaking the conventional model of vocabulary explanation, avoiding isolated word memorization, grouping words, and memorizing them in sequences, where learning one word can teach several, doubling vocabulary acquisition. This section meticulously selects nearly 500 sets of near-form, near-meaning, cognate, or semantically related words/phrases for differentiation, covering over 2,000 words/phrases. It clearly and concisely explains differences and usage with representative, precise examples, making it more intuitive and easy to understand, teaching students to use words naturally and helping them overcome a major challenge in vocabulary mastery.
This book is suitable for candidates taking the English Majors' Proficiency Test, as a reference for College English Test Band 6, postgraduate applicants, and professional English teachers. It can also serve as a helpful tool for self-learners studying vocabulary.
