Patient's question:
My baby has been doing well since birth, but recently, they suddenly developed abnormal skin color. The hospital diagnosed it as biliary atresia and recommended a liver transplant. We were worried about our baby, so we went ahead with it. I would like to ask if a liver transplant can be performed after a choledochojejunostomy?Doctor's answer:
Hello, it is a pleasure to assist you: The gallbladder or extrahepatic bile duct can be anastomosed with the jejunum; if the extrahepatic bile duct is completely occluded but intrahepatic bile ducts still exist, anastomosis between the hepatic porta and the jejunum can be performed. If both intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts are completely occluded, or due to delayed surgery resulting in biliary cirrhosis and poor outcomes from hepatic porta jejunostomy, liver transplantation can be implemented.
