Features: This book attempts to examine the epitaphs of the Sui and Tang dynasties from the perspectives of calligraphy history and the aesthetics of calligraphy art. It places the calligraphic works of epitaphs within the development of calligraphy history, treating them as a specialized topic in the history of Sui and Tang calligraphy. Through a combination of macro and micro approaches, the study aims to determine the historical status and role of epitaph calligraphy, reflecting the historical landscape of Sui and Tang calligraphy from one angle, thereby deepening the understanding of calligraphy history. By exploring the heritage of epitaph calligraphy and promoting the traditional art of calligraphy, we have carefully and thoroughly classified and selected over five thousand Sui and Tang epitaph calligraphic works. From these, we have chosen over two hundred representative epitaph calligraphic works from various periods of the Sui and Tang dynasties for introduction and appreciation, tracing the developmental and exploring the trajectory of epitaph calligraphy. To avoid falling into the superficial level of simple appreciation, the examination places the calligraphic works of epitaphs within the broader social and cultural context of the Sui and Tang dynasties, linking them to the history of Tang calligraphy as a whole. It combines the calligraphy of famous masters of the era with folk calligraphy, exploring the historical status and artistic value of epitaph calligraphy through comparison. Our focus lies in the calligraphic historical and artistic value of epitaph calligraphy. Through the examination and study of epitaph calligraphy, we enrich the content of calligraphy history while promoting more epitaph calligraphic works with high artistic value for appreciation and learning. As for the documentary value of epitaphs, it is not within the scope of this book's research.
