It primarily draws from the large-scale calligraphy reference books published by the Cultural Relics Publishing House, such as Cursive Script Compendium, Clerical Script Compendium, Running Script Compendium, Seal Script Compendium, and Regular Script Compendium, supplemented by some newly collected materials. This compendium includes the works of 616 renowned calligraphers from the Qin and Han dynasties to the present, as well as oracle bone script, bronze inscriptions, epitaphs, sculptures, and inscriptions, numbering over 2,500 pieces. All are selected and printed from original copies to preserve their authenticity. The compendium is organized according to the new Dictionary of Modern Chinese radical index system. It contains 4,560 single characters and over 60,000 variant forms of calligraphy. Below each example character in regular script, 369 variant forms and 1,403 simplified characters are listed. The arrangement of variant forms follows seal script, clerical script, regular script, running script, and cursive script, from top to bottom and right to left, with larger characters aligned to the left. Each example character is annotated with the calligrapher's name, the title of the calligraphy book, or the name of the stele or tablet it is derived from.
At the end of the book, there are appendices such as List of Cited Calligraphers' Works, List of Cited Seal Script Materials, List of Cited Clerical Script Materials, List of Cited Regular Script Materials, and List of Major Reference Books, for easy consultation.
