Publishing Date: 2005-10-01
Features: "Direct English" is a set of listening and speaking intensive teaching materials designed specifically for English learners. It is another classic work by Louis Alexander, the author of "New Concept English." Unlike "New Concept English," "Direct English" adopts a series of short dramas to integrate language knowledge into the storyline. Learners achieve the goal of strengthening their English listening and speaking skills by imitating authentic American English. This series is divided into 9 volumes, spanning 3 levels, with difficulty levels distributed as follows:
● Beginner level suitable for learners with zero English proficiency;
● Volumes 1-3 suitable for elementary English learners;
● Volumes 4-6 suitable for intermediate English learners;
● Volumes 7-8 suitable for advanced-intermediate English learners.
"Direct English" follows the general principles of English learning, structuring the based on the three stages of the learning process: "building" (accumulation) — "consolidation" — "expanding." At the same time, the short drama plots are closely related to American life, featuring vivid and distinctive characters, lively and humorous language, and an evolving storyline that keeps learners engaged for sustained interest, ultimately achieving the desired learning outcomes.
This series consists of 8 volumes, with each volume divided into 9 units, each unit comprising 3 lessons. At the end of each unit, a self-assessment is designed, including a summary of key points and a self-test. A vocabulary list is provided at the back of the book for reference. Each lesson includes three parts: the main dialogue (or main text), language learning and practice, and translations. The study of the main dialogue (or main text) is the process of accumulating language knowledge; the language learning and practice section includes key grammar explanations, extended dialogues, and extended exercises. The extended dialogues help learners consolidate previously accumulated language knowledge and improve their listening skills, while the extended exercises provide oral training, achieving the effect of balanced listening and speaking.
Suggested Study Time: Each lesson requires 1-2 study hours, each unit requires 3-6 study hours, and each volume requires 30-60 study hours. Users can adjust their learning pace based on their own foundation.
