Features: Nursing professionals are a crucial force in the healthcare sector. Therefore, developing higher nursing education and cultivating advanced nursing talents that meet modern needs have become an important component of medical education in China. With the continuous advancement of medical science and the growing recognition of the importance of nursing in healthcare, disease treatment, and disease rehabilitation, society's demands for the scientific quality, comprehensive abilities, and innovative awareness of nursing professionals have also been increasing. With the shift to the bio-psycho-social medical model, preventive medicine, as an essential part of the entire medical field, has been further integrated with other medical disciplines, including the integration with the nursing discipline. Mastering the necessary knowledge of preventive healthcare, basic methods, and fundamental skills in preventive medicine has become the professional quality required for nursing students to engage in clinical and community nursing practice, nursing management, and nursing research in the future.
This textbook was developed under the direct guidance of the National Higher Medical Education Textbook Construction Research Association and the Textbook Office of the Ministry of Health. During the writing process, it adhered to the basic requirements of the Textbook Office of the Ministry of Health and the Textbook Review Committee for Nursing Specialty, striving to highlight the characteristics of the nursing profession and meet the needs of higher nursing education, thereby facilitating the cultivation of advanced nursing talents. In terms of content organization, it followed the spirit of the meeting of the chief editors of the fourth round of the Ministry of Health's planned nursing specialty textbooks in September 2005, ensuring the systematic completeness and professionalism of the entire textbook while avoiding unnecessary repetition with other materials. The writing process emphasized the connotation of preventive medicine suitable for higher nursing education, focusing on scientificity, systematicity, logic, and applicability, while also advocating the integrated optimization of basic knowledge, theories, and skills in preventive medicine and emphasizing the development of practical problem-solving abilities.
The textbook includes an introduction, four main parts (18 chapters), and an internship guide. The introduction primarily explains the concept of health, the definition of preventive medicine, the history of preventive medicine, medical models, public health measures, and the significance of nursing students learning preventive medicine.
The first part discusses preventive healthcare strategies and measures, the second part covers the relationship between the environment and health, the third part introduces statistical methods for population health research, and the fourth part presents epidemiological methods for population health research. The framework structure of this textbook is similar to that of the edition of "Preventive Medicine," with no major changes. However, the first part has been expanded to include disease control content, focusing on communicable diseases, chronic non-communicable diseases, hospital infection prevention and control, as well as strategies and measures for responding to and controlling public health emergencies. The goal is to enable nursing students to master the basic knowledge and skills for major disease control and to understand the main strategies and steps for handling public health emergencies in China.
In the second part, the content on nutrition and health and community nutrition has been reduced, while additional content on food safety has been added. This not only avoids repetition with other related textbooks but also highlights the critical issue of food safety, which is closely related to public health. In the past decade, the concept of treating diseases based on the best scientific evidence has gained increasing attention, and evidence-based medicine has become increasingly prominent in guiding clinical and nursing work. Therefore, the fourth part on epidemiological methods has been expanded to include a section on evidence-based medicine, encouraging nursing professionals to use scientific and the most appropriate nursing research evidence to guide nursing practice.
In terms of the relationship between innovation and tradition, foundation and application, theory and practice, preventive medicine, and the nursing discipline, this textbook strives to achieve harmony and unity.
