Features: The National Translation Professional Qualification (Level) Examination Japanese Translation (Intermediate Level) Syllabus (Trial) sets the basic requirements for translation practice as follows: "1. Ability to apply general translation techniques for bidirectional Chinese-Japanese translation. 2. Faithfulness to the original text, with no serious mistranslations or omissions. 3. Fluent translation with correct word choice and no obvious grammatical or expressive errors." This textbook is compiled in line with the overall spirit of the "Interim Provisions on the National Translation Professional Qualification (Level) Examination" issued by the National Personnel Department, and specifically meets the requirements of the Japanese Translation (Intermediate Level) Syllabus. To help candidates understand translation theory, master translation techniques, improve translation skills, and conduct correct Chinese-Japanese bidirectional translation, we have focused on the following aspects in the compilation:
1. Prioritizing practice while not neglecting theory and techniques. Translation practice is primarily a practical subject. While emphasizing this characteristic, we have also introduced translation theory and techniques without neglecting them. Blind practice without theory is futile, and mastering theory is precisely to better practice. In addition to the general principles of translation, each lesson elaborates on the characteristics and key points of translation for that genre. In the Chinese-Japanese and Japanese-Chinese translation examples, "Explanations" are provided. These reflect our thoughts and understanding of translation and are also the accumulated experience of long-term translation professionals.
2. Explaining and illustrating the combination of theory and practice. Providing correct reference answers for the examples used is important, but more importantly, it is essential to explain why such translations are made, especially for key words, sentence structures, and cultural contexts. Whenever such situations arise, we strive to provide explanations within the scope of the text, combining theory and practice to help learners understand not only what but also why.
3. Selecting materials flexibly to cover commonly used topics. Translators face various situations and content from diverse fields. To meet this requirement, we have carefully considered the selection of materials. This textbook consists of 16 lessons, covering speeches, application documents, business letters, legal documents, contracts, investment promotion, tender documents, sales documents, litigation documents, financial and insurance documents, scientific and technical documents, tourism documents, news reports, argumentative essays, as well as prose, fiction, and poetry translation. The selected articles are designed to be timely, relevant, and practical. Considering the proficiency level required by the Intermediate Level Syllabus, no Chinese-to-Japanese translation sections are provided for prose, fiction, and poetry.
