Features: This book is a school management guide written specifically for school leaders by Arthur W. Combs, a renowned American educator, psychologist, and former president of the International Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. It addresses the new challenges of a "human-centered" education approach in the global context. The book is guided by the educational philosophy of "human-centeredness," contrasting with the traditional, corporate-like mindset of school management. From three different perspectives—leadership and beliefs, leadership and change, and leadership and organization—it elaborates on the new challenges that "human-centered" education will bring to school leadership. Through numerous clear and concise examples, the authors creatively propose new concepts, ideas, and methods for school leaders to become outstanding managers.
The authors argue that under the guidance of "human-centeredness," the work of school leaders largely involves managing interpersonal relationships. These relationships encompass teachers, students, administrative staff, parents, and other members of the community. In light of this, the authors propose specific approaches and methods for school leaders. To respond to issues, school leaders must consciously seek appropriate information; they must cultivate and enhance their empathy; they must develop a healthy self-concept for themselves and others (including students and faculty); they should embrace a broad educational purpose and be acutely aware of how their beliefs and actions will impact the school organization; and they must engage authentically in interpersonal interactions within the school organization. Additionally, they must help foster a genuine atmosphere of learning and research within the school. Only in this way can school leaders truly create a learning organization where everyone is committed to education.
To ensure the comprehensive and thorough implementation of "human-centered" education, the authors believe that universities that train school leaders should also dedicate more time to researching "human-centered" school leadership approaches. Furthermore, leadership training programs for various schools should make corresponding changes in their curriculum design, academic activities, and practical activities, striving to cultivate innovative talent who firmly believe in the "human-centered" philosophy.
