The book Six Dynasties Capitals was written by the young scholar Dr. Lu Haiming. Over the past decade, the author has persistently studied Jiankang, the political, economic, and cultural center of the Six Dynasties, from a macro perspective and micro level, conducting an in-depth yet accessible exploration of Jiankang's culture. This work reconstructs the original appearance of Jiankang in the past and serves as an encyclopedic guide to understanding the ancient capital of Nanjing.
The book focuses on Jiankang, the capital of the Six Dynasties, and is divided into twelve chapters. The first chapter takes a macro perspective, first tracing the changes in the political center before the establishment of the Wu regime and analyzing the roots of these changes. It then examines the reasons why Jiankang remained a stable capital for the Six Dynasties from three aspects: natural factors, social factors, and fengshui factors. Chapters two to eleven, spanning ten chapters, delve into Jiankang from a micro perspective, respectively investigating ten aspects: urban planning and construction, city walls, fortifications, administrative districts, ceremonial buildings, municipal construction, markets, residential districts, gardens, temples and shrines, and mausoleums. The final chapter evaluates Jiankang's role and significance in the Six Dynasties from a broader historical perspective, covering its political, economic, intellectual, cultural, and foreign exchange positions.
