Features: Organized by the Center for Teaching Chinese to Foreigners at Peking University, this series of textbooks is specially designed for foreign learners of Chinese. The entire series is divided into three stages: Elementary Chinese, Intermediate Chinese, and Advanced Chinese. The content of the three stages is closely coordinated but remains independent of each other. The entire series can be systematically used, or individual stages can be selected based on proficiency level and teaching needs. The content is arranged in a progressive manner. The elementary stage focuses on basic training, the intermediate stage emphasizes consolidating and improving the ability to use Chinese, while the advanced stage aims to cultivate the ability to read original Chinese texts and express ideas in writing. The text content emphasizes a wide range of themes and diverse styles, striving to be lively and reflect the realities of China. It also provides appropriate introductions to certain aspects of traditional Chinese culture. Each lesson includes substantial exercises to reinforce the vocabulary and grammar learned in the text. This book is a continuation and advancement of Elementary Chinese. Each lesson consists of five parts: text, vocabulary list, word explanations, exercises, and reading materials. The two volumes together contain approximately 1,600 words (including words and closely structured phrases). The vocabulary in the second volume gradually increases to approach the level required for reading original Chinese texts in this series' advanced course. The part of speech noted for each word is primarily based on its usage in the text, supplemented by other common usages. Considering that students may have different learning backgrounds, some less common words and more challenging words from the elementary course are reintroduced as vocabulary in this book. The word explanations are concise, avoiding detailed grammatical analysis or English translations. The exercises focus on repeated practice of the common words introduced in the lesson, while also integrating comprehensive practice of previously learned material, including some important linguistic phenomena from the elementary course. The reading section can be seen as a supplement to the exercises, aiming to ensure that the new vocabulary from the text appears repeatedly, addressing the issue of low vocabulary recycling in the textbook. Simple exercises are provided after each reading material, with answers that can be easily checked without consuming classroom time. The reading materials and their exercises can also be used for listening or speaking practice.
