The "Reading Fun" column was launched in January 1986 as a special column derived from the "Nightlight Cup" supplement. It was proposed by the supplement editor Cao Zhengwen and independently edited by him from 1986 to 2006, totaling 1,000 issues by August 2006. Throughout its 20 years, the column maintained the consistent style of the "Nightlight Cup," organizing submissions from renowned writers while valuing contributions from general readers. Cao Zhengwen, under the pen name "Mishu," ran the column "Book Friends' Tea House," responding to 10,000 readers' letters and encouraging them to buy books. The column introduced 20 sections, including "Joy in Books," "Why I Write," "Me and Books," "A Book That Influenced My Life," "My Study," "Current Reading Perspectives," "My Book," "Book Reviews," "Evening Reading Reflections," "Book Hunting Records," "Bookstore Sketches," "Editorial Notes," and "Experiences in Foreign Book Markets." Over the years, it organized more than 300 submissions from renowned scholars and writers such as Bing Xin, Zhao Jiabi, Ke Ling, Shi Zhecun, Wang Yuanhua, Zhang Kebiao, Qin Shouou, Yu Guangyuan, Zang Kejia, Tang Guizhang, Su Buqing, Qian Zhonglian, Jia Zhifang, Ji Xianlin, Chen Huangmei, Jin Kemu, Qin Zhuang, Feng Yingzi, Zhou Ruchang, Lou Shiyi, Zhang Peiheng, Wang Meng, Liu Shaha, Zhang Xianliang, Yu Qiuqiu, and Zhang Ping. Seven series of "Reading Fun" books were published, and the column received over 10 awards. The renowned professor and former president of the Shanghai Writers' Association, Xu Zhongyu, once praised the column: "Reading Fun" often features short but meaningful articles. The writing is engaging, blending seriousness with humor, avoiding clichés and adding more charm. Stuffy academic lectures are rare here; it can be said to be a pure haven in the garden of news."
