Features: This book is the principal work of Montesquieu (C. L. Montesquieu, 1689-1755), a distinguished Enlightenment thinker in the first half of the 18th century, the main founder of modern bourgeois political and legal thought, and one of the founders of the modern historical school. It is hailed as "a comprehensive political work after Aristotle" and "the most progressive political theory up to his time." The legal system, political freedom, and separation of powers advocated in the book were a powerful critique of theology and feudal absolutism, becoming the political program of the bourgeois revolution that followed. Especially the theory of separation and checks and balances, which Montesquieu formally proposed for the first time, had a direct and profound impact on bourgeois political practice and thought since the modern era. Through the practice of bourgeois revolutions in France and the United States, it has become the organizational principle for establishing democratic systems and state governance in bourgeois states. Montesquieu's focus was not on specific legal norms themselves but on the spirit of law, that is, the necessity and regularity of law aligning with human reason. Therefore, Montesquieu placed law in a decisive position, believing that only law could guarantee the freedom and rights of the people, while absolutism was a contempt for human nature and a trampling of freedom. He further explored the institutional conditions necessary for freedom to exist and, through this, found the basic means to restore freedom—the separation of powers, using power to restrain power, and preventing the abuse of power. He advocated a political system under the supremacy of the constitution with the separation and checks and balances of powers. This combined law, freedom, and the constitution, laying the basic framework for constitutional theory, which was also Montesquieu's outstanding contribution to political theory. His contributions were also reflected in the historicalist and holistic research methods he employed. Montesquieu's entire theory was built upon the analysis of historical facts and the political, social, and legal practices of various countries throughout history. He grasped the dynamic relationships and influences among the various factors of society—history—culture, as well as the living environment of people, to understand the laws governing the changes in a nation's political system and legal development. This was an advancement beyond traditional political and legal research methods. In the "pre-scientific" period of social theory, it pushed the study of political science and law one step closer to science. The complete Chinese translation of the book is divided into two volumes, six parts, and thirty-one chapters. The main content can be summarized as follows:
① The definition of law, the relationship between law and the state, the types of states and their respective principles (Chapters 1-10).

③ The theory of the relationship between geography and politics and various deductions (Chapters 14-19).
