Features: On April 24, 2004, an academic symposium titled "Construction and Development of Japanese Major Discipline" was held. In the morning session, Professor Su Ji-gao, President of the Chinese Association of Japanese Teaching, delivered a keynote speech on "Japanese Language Teaching and the Cultivation of Humanistic Spirit." Professor Tan Jing-hua, Head of the Japanese Teaching Guidance Committee of the Ministry of Education, spoke on "About the Undergraduate Education Curriculum of Japanese and the Four-Eight Level Tests." Professor Cao Da-feng of the Beijing Japanese Studies Research Center presented a keynote speech on "Research on Japanese Major Intensive Reading Teaching and Textbook Reform." In the afternoon forum, the heads of the Japanese departments from Shanghai International Studies University, Peking University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Tsinghua University, and Beijing Normal University respectively introduced the construction of their disciplines and engaged in lively discussions on the development direction of Chinese Japanese education in the new century, diversification and pluralization of discipline construction, and other related issues. Subsequently, the representatives were divided into groups to conduct in-depth academic discussions on specialized topics such as teaching philosophy, teaching methods, textbook analysis, and teaching grammar. This proceedings collects most of the papers from the symposium to showcase the outcomes of the conference. Additionally, it includes some research achievements of the faculty from this department and a brilliant academic speech by Professor Kazumura Akira of Tokyo Women's University titled "Language of the Criticized Era · Language of Weaving the World—'Capitalism' Described by Takizō."
