Features: This book collects reports from a symposium held in spring 2002 with the theme "The Relationship between Citizens and the State: A Framework for Modern Civil Law." It was a high-quality symposium where participating experts discussed the current status of China's draft Civil Code with a highly serious and responsible attitude. Over 130 legal experts from all over the country participated in the discussion. In addition to members of the Civil Code drafting team, the conference also included representatives from the Chinese government and the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. Furthermore, representatives from all well-known universities and legal institutions in China were invited to attend. The German legal community also sent renowned civil law experts to participate and give presentations. The symposium was highly successful and received extraordinary in China's legal community. Many participants highly praised the symposium during the discussions, considering it a national forum where experts explored, through dialogue, how to establish a unified Civil Code for China, a historically significant task for the country. Therefore, the Institute of Law at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Foundation decided to publish the most important papers from this symposium for reference. It is hoped that this book will provide an opportunity for others equally interested in this topic to conduct more in-depth research.
