Record of Visiting Old Friends in Yangzhou, Reminiscences of the Remaining Spring

Author: Du Zhaotang
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2005-08-01
Features: Xiyuchun Yishi and Yangzhou Fangjiulu are nostalgic works by Du Zhaotang, a renowned cultural scholar of Yangzhou during the Republican era, introducing the local history and anecdotes of his hometown. Du Zhaotang (1891–1983), originally named Fei'en, styled Luhui, and using the pen names Fuweng and Yangzhou Xiao Du, was a native of Yangzhou. He excelled in poetry and prose, particularly in crafting couplets, and was a member of the modern Yangzhou poetry societies Yechun Houshe and Zhexi Houshe. After 1949, he resided in Taiwan and engaged in literary creation. He authored works such as Woxianji, Fuweng Lianhua, and Fuweng Shicun.
Yangzhou Fangjiulu is a record of Du Zhaotang's search for historical sites, collection of local legends, and verification of facts in Yangzhou. The original manuscript bears the inscription "Xin Xincheng" at the beginning, indicating that the author initially planned to structure the book into multiple volumes based on geographical regions. However, after reading Wucheng Huaijiulu by another Yangzhou cultural scholar Dong Yushu, he felt a sense of resonance and abandoned his original plan. As a result, readers only see this unfinished manuscript of over 20,000 words. Despite its incompleteness, the content remains rich, offering detailed descriptions of the changes in streets and alleys, local customs and anecdotes, and the lives of notable figures in Yangzhou, making it a valuable reference.
