Features: The Analects, compiled by Confucius's disciples and their successors, is an important Confucian classic that records the words and deeds of Confucius. Since the Western Han Dynasty, the Confucian doctrine expressed in the Analects has rapidly expanded, influencing various fields such as politics, thought, culture, education, and ethics, becoming a major symbol of traditional Chinese culture. Annotations on the chapters of the Analects have been passed down through generations.
The renowned Taiwanese scholar, Mr. Nan Huaijin, with his profound knowledge and extensive references, has written The Unofficial Analects as a lecture record on the Analects. In the book, he provides detailed and vivid explanations for every paragraph of the twenty chapters. Not only does he offer insights into the structure and connections of the chapters and paragraphs, but he also elucidates the meaning of the original text and the relevant historical anecdotes. What is particularly innovative is that the author compiles the explanations of the original text into a series of historical stories, which are profound in meaning yet full of charm. This approach sets The Unofficial Analects apart from other commentaries on the Analects.
The original book was published by the Taiwan Lao Gu Cultural Enterprise Company in May 1976. By 1988, it had gone through eighteen printings. To promote the shared Chinese culture of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, with the author's and the original publisher's consent, the eighteenth edition of The Unofficial Analects has been rearranged and republished for research purposes.
