Features: This book includes an explanation of strategic value analysis, designed to facilitate the adoption of this technique. It illustrates how this technique is applied in practice, provides examples, and offers programmed leadership for various application domains. This chapter introduces the main aspects of strategic value analysis and the key attributes that support its successful implementation and application. The methodology of strategic value analysis originated from value engineering and value analysis. It was developed by two parties and, after 1960, Japanese companies adopted and evolved it into a multidisciplinary technique. During this period, the performance of Japanese companies significantly improved, with many small Japanese firms growing into internationally renowned large corporations. Although the development of Japanese companies was influenced by factors such as scarce natural resources and currency appreciation, strategic value analysis played a crucial role in this process. Strategic value analysis not only provides a structured approach but also cultivates the necessary realism and decision-making capabilities among engineers. It starts by emphasizing the relationship between products and customers and gradually expands to most critical organizational and decision-making domains within a company. Strategic value analysis combines personnel information and clear objectives through systematic procedures, aiming to bring innovative, constructive, and rewarding changes. The book also includes numerous case studies. The author, Takehisa Yoshikawa, is a professor in the Department of Management Accounting at Yokohama National University in Japan and a visiting professor at the University of Edinburgh. John Innes is a retired professor of Management Accounting at the University of Dundee. Falconer Mitchell is a professor of Management Accounting at the University of Edinburgh. Since the late 1980s, these three professors have jointly dedicated themselves to research on strategic value analysis.
