Features: China Regional Competitiveness Development Report (1985—2004) is one of the outcomes of the National Statistical Science Research Program Project (LX2002—77), China Regional International Competitiveness Development Research. International competitiveness research emerged in the 1980s along with the process of economic globalization. As it aims to analyze and identify the capabilities and competitive advantages of countries and regions in participating in international market competition, its research conclusions hold high theoretical policy value and market commercial analysis value, attracting significant attention from governments of various countries, multinational corporations, and international investment institutions. This has led to a research boom in developed and emerging countries. Institutions specializing in international competitiveness research, such as the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), have rapidly developed. Just as the new millennium was beginning in January 2000, the World Economic Forum held a major conference in Davos, Switzerland, themed New Millennium, New Economy. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and leaders of all major Western countries, as well as globally renowned entrepreneurs like Bill Gates and heads of multinational corporations and various international organizations, gathered for the conference. Why does the World Economic Forum have such immense influence? This is inseparable from its image, which it has built since the 1980s by annually releasing global international competitiveness rankings. Data shows that thousands of experts from various fields worldwide participate in the World Economic Forum's international competitiveness expert assessment work, fully demonstrating the global enthusiasm for international competitiveness research. China has paid close attention to the global rise of competitiveness research. In the mid-1980s, visionary figures from the State Commission for Restructuring the Economy introduced international competitiveness research into China. In 1989, the State Commission for Restructuring the Economy collaborated with the WEF and IMD to launch China's international competitiveness research. In 1995, China officially joined the WEF and IMD's Competitiveness World Evaluation System. In 1997, a research team jointly formed by the State Commission for Restructuring the Economy, Renmin University of China, and the Shenzhen Comprehensive Development Research Institute published China Regional Competitiveness Development Report (1996) based on world competitiveness evaluation information and other relevant data. This report systematically described and analyzed the state of China's international competitiveness for the first time and interpreted the international competitiveness theories and evaluation methods of the WEF and IMD, greatly advancing domestic research. With the acceleration of China's marketization process and the pressure of aligning with international standards following its WTO entry, all aspects of China have felt the impact of economic globalization, leading to a sustained rise in competitiveness research. In 1997, Professor Zhao Yanyun from Renmin University of China traveled to Tianjin University of Finance and Economics to deliver an insightful academic lecture on International Competitiveness, which prompted us to shift from attention to action. In 1998, we applied to the Tianjin Social Science Foundation for a project, marking the beginning of our competitiveness research focused on domestic administrative regions.
