The 27 countries covered in this Yellow Book were once socialist states. These countries have now severely diverged, facing vastly different development challenges and are riddled with conflicts among themselves. Frequent crises are an apt description of this turbulent region. Addressing challenges was a common theme in the development of these countries in 2005—whether facing the arduous tasks of economic transformation and development, the challenges of "color revolutions," or the geopolitical pressure from the West. The development of these countries, particularly those in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) like Russia, still remains uncertain. Where they are headed will have significant implications not only for the region but also for China and the entire world.
