Features: Since the 21st century, the rapid economic development of India has increasingly attracted worldwide attention. Many scholars believe this is the result of economic restructuring implemented in India during the 1990s. However, opinions differ regarding the driving forces, trajectory, economic development model, performance, and potential of the reforms after India's restructuring. This book uses institutional change theory as the basic analytical tool to explore the trajectory of India's economic restructuring and development since the 1990s, clarify the changes in the economic development model since the reforms, study the driving forces, performance, political and social factors, and their mutual influence on India's economic restructuring, and derive some valuable lessons and insights. The book consists of an introduction and six chapters. Chapter 1 reviews the establishment and adjustments of India's constitutional system and traditional economic system, providing the background of institutional change for India's economic restructuring in the 1990s. By examining the historical context, this chapter explores how India, after independence, designed and chose its parliamentary democracy and mixed economy system, the operation, performance, and flaws of this system, as well as the adjustments made by the Indian government in relevant policies. Chapter 2 focuses on introducing the specific policy measures of economic restructuring implemented by the Rao and Vajpayee governments. Using institutional change theory, it analyzes the decision-making motivation of the government as the main subject of institutional change, as well as the cost constraints and strategic choices in the reforms. Chapter 3 summarizes the economic performance of institutional change in India over the more than ten years since the reforms. Chapter 5 analyzes the mutual influence between India's economic reforms and social development. Chapter 6 provides reflections and theoretical summaries on India's economic restructuring and development. During the reform process, India developed a unique development model based on its own realities, offering us many valuable insights.
