Features: The greatest feature of this book is that it is tailored to the needs of its target audience, focusing on "special topics" while also covering historical and institutional aspects, blending cultural knowledge with academic spirit. Therefore, the book is divided into five parts: "Characteristics of Ancient Chinese Culture," "Institutional Aspects of Ancient Chinese Culture," "Progress of Ancient Chinese Scholarship," "Religious and Artistic Traditions of Ancient China," and "Modernization of Chinese Culture." These five parts are relatively distinct, with the book primarily focusing on twenty-one topics (twenty-one chapters). Each topic is relatively independent, so it does not aim to be all-encompassing or deeply explored in every case; however, the topics are interconnected, forming an organic whole.
Specifically:
Part One consists of four topics, showcasing the composition of traditional cultural characteristics through ethical models, geographical environments, economic foundations, and patriarchal systems.
Part Two includes five topics, focusing on officials, examinations, education, science and technology, and ritual music to illustrate the state of ancient cultural institutions.
Part Three features seven topics, tracing the evolution of ancient Chinese scholarship from historical records culture to Confucianism, classics, metaphysics, Buddhism, and Neo-Confucianism.
Part Four comprises three topics, discussing religion, art, and literature, encompassing their institutions, schools, and spiritual essence.
Part Five differs from the first four parts, as it describes and discusses the phenomenon of Chinese culture transitioning from ancient to modern times, containing two topics: one on the transformation of cultural and academic thought, and another on the exchange of cultural and academic ideas.
The inclusion of this part stems from two considerations:
1. To clarify the changes between old and new cultures, providing a deeper reflection on traditional culture.
2. To examine the origins and evolution of traditional Chinese culture, highlighting its enduring intrinsic cultural spirit that remains unchanged over time.
