Features: Introduction
"Special landscapes" refer to unique topographical or geological features. The term "special" is undefined, yet Taiwan, a small island, boasts volcanic terrain in Penghu and Yangmingshan, canyon landscapes in Taroko, the rugged rocky coasts of the northern and eastern coasts, mud volcanoes, fire mountains, various types of badlands, and dense fault structures... The diversity and richness of these landscapes may be commonplace for the people who live here, but they always leave geologists from other countries in awe. Taiwan's Special Landscapes – Northern Taiwan includes seven chapters: Background of Topographical Development, Northern Coast, Taipei Basin and Surrounding Mountains, Datun Volcanic Group, Fire Mountain and Mudstone Badlands, River Landscapes of the Eastern Section of the Central Cross-Island Highway, Granite Landscapes of Kinmen. Taiwan's Special Landscapes – Southern Taiwan includes five chapters: Eastern Coast, Mud Volcanoes, Hengchun Peninsula, Basalt Landscapes of Penghu, International Trends and Mechanisms of Landscape Conservation.
