Listen to the children's voice: Understanding common issues in children's growth

Features: A brief "problem" behavior phase is unavoidable in the normal growth process of any child. For example, almost all children go through a period of stuttering when learning to speak. In their efforts to gain parental approval, their actions may also produce other predictable problems. Children aged four or five often steal from their parents, trying to gain some control over them. They lie to their parents to test them. Although these phenomena are only temporary, they can cause concern. A girl's stomachache and a boy's bedwetting are much more common than people think (see Chapters 9 and 12). During the process of growing into a healthy and rational adult, these deviations from normal behavior have their own role. It seems that most children must explore or experience these deviations from normal behavior when learning what behaviors are acceptable.
