Does neonatal jaundice cause drowsiness?

Patient's question:

My son is one year old this year. He just left the hospital two days ago, but recently he has been sleeping a lot, which is a bit abnormal. So I took him to the hospital for a check-up. The doctor said my son has jaundice. I wonder if jaundice in newborns can cause drowsiness?

Doctor's answer:

Sleepiness is known as mental decline, and further tests are needed to rule out bilirubin encephalopathy. For newborns with high jaundice index, the main treatment methods include blue light irradiation combined with oral medication, or intravenous administration of jaundice treatment drugs. As long as the jaundice index can be reduced in a timely manner and is unrelated to jaundice, it is mainly to avoid serious complications such as bilirubin encephalopathy or kernicterus. Severe cases may require blood transfusion treatment. Jaundice requires timely treatment.
