Patient's question:
I recently noticed that my child's gaze is very vacant, and I'm worried it might be a Down syndrome baby. What are the symptoms of Down syndrome infants?Doctor's answer:
The symptoms of Down syndrome are not necessarily a small and round head, wide-set eyes, small palpebral fissures, slanted outer canthi, epicanthal folds, low nasal bridge, small ears, narrow hard palate, protruding mouth, and excessive saliva. Physical development is delayed, resulting in short stature, delayed bone age, delayed tooth development, and frequent dislocations. The limbs are short, ligaments are loose, and joints are excessively flexed. Fingers are short and thick, with almost no inward curvature. Both motor and sexual development are delayed.
