How to Treat a Newborn's Congestion

Patient's question:

The child is too cold at night while sleeping and always kicks off the blanket, catching a cold. During the day, they have a runny nose and a red nose. At night, they experience nasal congestion and difficulty breathing through their nose, and it feels like there is phlegm in their throat. What should I do about nasal congestion and difficulty breathing in newborns?

Doctor's answer:

When a child has a stuffy nose and difficulty breathing, it is recommended that the mother use a clean towel or gauze, dip it in hot water, and wrap it in layers. Be careful not to burn the child. Then place the wrapped cloth on the base of the child's nose (a little below the eyebrows) for a hot compress. The duration of the hot compress must be long—you can change the hot water and reheat it several times. This can stimulate the child's nose, reduce sneezing, relieve nasal congestion, alleviate breathing difficulties, and make it easier for the child to breathe.
