6-day-old newborn with jaundice level 15 - is it serious?

Patient's question:

The baby has been born for six days. Starting from the third day, jaundice appeared. Initially, the measurement on the head was 12.9, and on the face, it was 15.3. After taking Yinzhihuang at home for two days, the measurement on the head was 11.9 on the third day and 11.3 on the fourth day. Is this indicator normal? Should the baby be hospitalized for treatment or continue taking medication?

Doctor's answer:

General blue light exposure typically requires three to four days. It is recommended to continue the treatment for a few more days while maintaining frequent breastfeeding to promote bowel movement and excretion. Usually, jaundice will recur several times before gradually improving.
Infant jaundice can be either physiological or pathological. If it appears early, within 24 hours, it is considered abnormal, while appearing on the second or third day is normal. I don’t know what unit you are referring to, but I assume it should be MG/DL, which falls within the normal physiological range and does not require hospitalization. Improvement is usually noticeable within about 10 days.
