The Magic School Bus: Exploring Bats

Author: Cole et al. (USA)
Publisher:
Publication Date: 2005-10-01
Features: The authors of this book have extensive knowledge about bats. For example, the description of the gray bat (Lasiurus cinereus) in the book is accurate—this bat species is indeed endangered in the United States. The reason is the human strategy of sealing off caves where they live to protect the bats. Another example is the echolocation calls of the spotted bat (Lasiurus ega). The frequency of these calls is indeed low enough for humans to hear.
The book also discusses vampire bats. In our perception, vampire bats have always had a negative image. In recent years, in countries like Brazil and Mexico in Latin America, people have been dying from rabies after being bitten by vampire bats each year. Regarding vampire bats, we currently know of three species. From the book, we also learn that bats feed on insects that are harmful to animals, crops, and humans, making them very important to humans. When foraging, they can even help plants spread pollen, allowing new plants to grow.
Of course, bats that eat insects and those that spread pollen are two different types. The former are small bats that love insects, while the latter are fruit-eating bats. It can be said that this is one of the few children's books in China about this special group of animals—bats. It will play an important role in helping young people understand the crucial role bats play in ecosystems, as well as issues like the potential spread of viruses by bats.
