From the center of European fashion and cultural life, from Otto Wagner's Vienna, from the Secessionists, from Adolf Loos, he came to the central city of Chicago. For Frank Lloyd Wright, this was just a trip, but for a young architect, this trip was influenced by Wagner's modernist ideas and Loos's speeches and works about America, accepting Wright's offer for the position of publishing director and coming to this magical land where skyscrapers and small houses in the pastures were dreamlike places. If America could break free from old cultural constraints, straight skyscrapers would draw a brand new urban skyline, and the small houses on the pastures at the horizon would frame boundless scenery. Through architecture, or interpreted through steel and concrete, the spirit and ideals of America would be expressed.
