He was both a pioneer in the study of Chinese classical gardens and Western modern history, and one of the pioneers in the study of ancient Chinese architecture. Professor Tong Jun was rigorous in his scholarship, meticulous in his research, and relied on evidence, never bound by preconceived notions. His writing style ranged from elegant and refined to humorous and engaging, demonstrating excellence in both Chinese and English. This volume includes 7 research notes by Professor Tong Jun, covering the history of Chinese architecture, the history of Chinese painting, the history of Chinese sculpture, the history of Japanese architecture, and more. These notes were first written in the early 1930s. Additionally, he made numerous additions to these notes during his later years of research. To maintain their completeness, we have also organized and typeset all the marginal notes in his notes in italics and incorporated them into the main text.
