Features: This book has been published both domestically and internationally. The mainland edition is in simplified characters and is printed in horizontal format. The first edition has sold half a million copies. Since so many copies have been printed, I felt compelled to reread the book with respect for the readers. During the rereading, I found several places that needed revision. Previously, I had been reluctant to make changes because, to me, these words, written daily amidst the perilous struggles of life and death, were precious no matter how rough they seemed. However, I couldn’t ignore the readers and hoped to clear up some textual inconsistencies in the revision. These inconsistencies mainly manifested in two aspects. First, the writing was often rushed, with long passages lacking proper pacing and rhythm. Second, it was somewhat verbose, becoming more tangled under pressure. Therefore, this revision focused primarily on paragraphing and cutting down on wordiness.
This is a diary that records my personal experience of traveling thousands of kilometers off-road to explore the ruins of major human civilizations. The purpose was to find the foundations of ancient human civilizations, only to discover that so many sections were overgrown with weeds, filled with battle trenches, and plagued by bandits. The wheels of the jeep pressed tightly against the ground, one kilometer after another, completely unaware of what the next kilometer would bring, except for a series of terrifying true stories: here, religious extremists killed dozens of foreign travelers in minutes; there, three batches of foreigners had been kidnapped by rebel forces within the past two months; and further ahead, just thirty-three police officers had been killed by a drug trafficking group.
