Features: The China Academy of Sciences Press is a large-scale, comprehensive dictionary that combines the functions of a character dictionary, a language and literature dictionary, and an encyclopedic dictionary, organized by characters. It was first published in Shanghai by the Commercial Press in 1936. Subsequently, in the 30th and 40th anniversaries of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the 1979 and 1989 editions of the China Academy of Sciences Press were published. These two editions each had three-volume, compact, supplemented, and discipline-based book versions. Among them, the three-volume and compact versions have a cumulative circulation of over 5 million copies. In 1992, the Shanghai Publishing House and the Donghua Book Company published the China Academy of Sciences Press (1989 edition) in Taiwan. In 1993, the China Academy of Sciences Press won the National Book Award of the first edition—the Honor Award. The China Academy of Sciences Press (1999 edition) appeared before readers with a new look in both content and form. This edition is slightly larger in size than the 1989 edition, with a large number of revisions to the entries, mainly reflecting changes in domestic and foreign situations and the development of cultural science and technology, making up for omissions, correcting errors, and simplifying a small number of entries and definitions. This edition also adds a color-illustrated version with over 16,000 pictures, and the layout is also innovated, divided into four volumes, plus an appendix and an index volume. At the same time, the popular edition (three volumes) is continued, and on this basis, the compact edition is published, and additional book versions and CD-ROMs are also published. This book is the compact edition, with a total of 19,485 single characters (including traditional and variant characters) collected in the book, of which 17,674 are listed as headwords. The headwords and the entries listed under them (including general terms and encyclopedic terms) are a total of 122,835 entries.
