Professor Chen Jingpan's moral character, academic knowledge, and conduct have profoundly influenced several generations of his students, and we have always regarded him as a mentor to be respected in our hearts. Throughout his life, apart from his monographs and textbooks, Professor Chen Jingpan wrote over 500,000 words of essays, which can be broadly categorized into four areas: first, ancient Chinese education; second, modern Chinese education; third, foreign education and comparisons between foreign and Chinese education; and fourth, Chinese educational administration. Due to space constraints, only selected portions from the first three categories of essays are included in this collection for the readers. Through these essays, one can see the rigor, dedication, and hard work Professor Chen Jingpan devoted to his scholarship throughout his life. His life reflects the evolution of society, the destinies shaped by social development, and the lessons from the history of education, as well as its impact on the spiritual nourishment of individuals, and so on. Although these essays are unique, insightful, and imbued with his personal style, they also reflect the marks of the era in which he lived. To authentically recreate that historical period, the essays selected for this book have been left largely unaltered, allowing readers to experience the original essence of his work. These are the works left by history, for readers to savor and appreciate.
