This book is one of the excellent reference books that female and male obstetrics and gynecology practitioners in China, especially young physicians, regard as self-study material and must read. Due to its significant social and economic benefits, it was awarded the Second Prize of the "First Dual-Benefit Book Award" by the People's Medical Publishing House in 1998 and was selected as one of the 10 outstanding books in the 45-year history of the publishing house. This honor was primarily attributed to the contributions of Professor Su Yingkuan.
Mission and Innovation
The revision plan for the 3rd edition of Surgical Gynecology and Obstetrics originated in 1998 after receiving the "First Dual-Benefit Book Award." To meet the needs of (the broad readership), we began preliminary discussions under the urging of the publishing house. However, unexpected events occurred—I was deeply saddened to lose my respected mentor, the chief editor of this book, Professor Su Yingkuan, to a sudden heart attack at the age of 80. The Shandong Medical University (now the Clinical Medical College of Shandong University), especially the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Provincial Hospital where he worked, and the writing team of Surgical Gynecology and Obstetrics were in profound grief, and the revision plan was thus shelved. Under these circumstances, the responsibility of organizing the revision naturally fell upon me, to ensure that the new edition of Surgical Gynecology and Obstetrics could better meet the needs of (the broad readership), especially to reassure my mentor, Professor Su Yingkuan, in the afterlife. As the editor-in-chief, I channeled my grief into strength and resolved to make the new edition surpass the 2nd edition in both content and form, adding further brilliance to the outstanding book.
How to assemble the writing team and incorporate the youthful and capable (young and talented) into the writing group; how to integrate the new theories, knowledge, surgical techniques, and advancements in obstetrics and gynecology from recent years at home and abroad into the new edition concisely and clearly; how to structure the content to better meet the needs of readers and facilitate their understanding and learning. These have been the key questions sought during the organization of the 3rd edition revision.
After extensively reviewing domestic and international literature, closely integrating clinical practices in obstetrics and gynecology, and carefully analyzing readers' needs, we decided to make bold innovations in the organization of Surgical Gynecology and Obstetrics. Based on the original format of indications, contraindications, preoperative preparation, postoperative management, positioning, anesthesia, surgical steps, and precautions, we created two major sections for each major surgical procedure—"Preoperative Assessment" and "Surgical Exploration"—to collect important new theories, knowledge, surgical techniques, and advancements in obstetrics and gynecology from recent years. This made the structure more complete, the content richer, and more practical.
The new edition of Surgical Gynecology and Obstetrics also features contributions from renowned domestic and international gynecologists and obstetricians—Professor Lang Jinghe, Professor Xia Enlan, and Professor Liu Yan—who wrote chapters on malignant ovarian tumor surgery, hysteroscopic surgery, and laparoscopic surgery, respectively, sharing their extensive clinical surgical experience with the readers.
