Electromagnetic Fields and Electromagnetic Waves (Third Edition)

Publish Date: 1999-06-01
Features: This book is a revised version of "Electromagnetic Fields and Waves" (Second Edition) co-authored by Professor Xie Chu Fang and Professor Rao Ke Jin, published by Higher Education Press in July 1987. Due to the advanced age of the two professors, the revision was completed jointly by Professor Zhao Jia Sheng and Professor Yuan Jing Hong. During the revision process, the teaching basic requirements formulated by the National Teaching Guidance Group for Electromagnetic Field Theory Courses in Ordinary Universities of Engineering in 1993 and promulgated by the former State Education Commission were referred to. Suggestions and opinions from teachers of some universities who used the textbook were also incorporated, as well as the long-term teaching experience of the revisers in using the textbook. Compared with the previous edition, the main adjustments made in this revision in terms of teaching content and system structure are as follows:
(1) The original writing system of the book is retained, with the content of the textbook organized in the order of electrostatic field, steady electric field, Maxwell's equations, and sinusoidal electromagnetic fields and waves. However, significant adjustments have been made in writing style and chapter arrangement. For example, the definitions of electric field intensity E and magnetic induction intensity B in electrostatic and steady magnetic fields, two basic experimental laws, vector integral formulas, and the Lorentz formula are compiled into a new chapter titled "Basic Physical Quantities and Basic Experimental Laws in Electromagnetic Fields."
(2) The chapter "Steady Electric Field" in the original book is removed, and part of its content is merged into "Electrostatic Field Analysis."
(3) The chapter "Interaction between Charged Particles and Fields" in the original book is removed, and related content is included in chapters such as "Electrostatic Field Analysis" and "Steady Magnetic Field Analysis." The concept of interaction is not emphasized, and only the motion of charged particles in external fields is discussed.
(4) The chapter "Solution of Static Fields" in the original book is revised to "Solution Methods for Boundary Value Problems of Static Fields" and placed immediately after "Electrostatic Field Analysis" to enable students to more focusedly understand and master the general methods of solving potential fields. Additionally, this chapter has removed the original complex function method and the Schwarz-Christoffel transformation.
(5) The chapter "Waveguides and Resonant Cavities" in the original book is revised to "Guided Electromagnetic Waves" and includes additional content on transmission lines.
(6) The exercises at the end of the book are reorganized and supplemented, and some answers are provided.
