Features: Niger (officially the Republic of Niger) was born in 1960, a country with a very young history. It is located in the central-western inland region of the African continent, on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert. Its land area covers 1.267 million square kilometers, equivalent to the territory of the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Deserts and semi-deserts account for two-thirds of the country's total area. Due to its geographical location under the control of the subtropical high-pressure belt, the climate is hot and dry for most of the year, with scarce rainfall. Except for the Niger River basin in the south and southwest, where rainfall ranges from 600 to 800 millimeters, most regions receive less than 200 to 500 millimeters of precipitation, with some areas experiencing drought for years. As a result, Niger is one of the hottest countries in the world, known as the "Land of Scorching Sun." Niger is also a multi-ethnic country. There are the Hausa people, skilled in agriculture; the Tuareg and Fulani tribes, who have long been engaged in pastoralism; and the Zarma-Sanhaya and Toubou tribes, who primarily farm while also engaging in animal husbandry or fishing. These ethnic groups have distinct linguistic and cultural characteristics, which are reflected in their diverse and rich customs, forming a colorful and pluralistic society and culture in Niger. Historically, Niger experienced a period of brilliance and prosperity. From the 15th to the 19th centuries, it was successively part of the powerful Songhai Empire and Bornu Empire. In the central and eastern regions of Niger, along the trans-Saharan trade routes, some central cities flourished economically, with thriving trade, advanced culture, and education. Today, if you stroll through the old town of Agadez, a tourist destination, you will be amazed by its profound historical sense and ancient charm. Historically, Niger was a French colony. Although the French colonial rule was only a brief moment in Niger's thousands of years of history, its impact on Niger has been profound. For example, Niger began to become a modern nation with clear territorial boundaries during this period. Its modern political system and capitalist market mechanisms were also introduced unconsciously during the French colonial rule. However, these systems did not benefit the people of Niger before independence and instead left behind more blood and tears, poverty, and backwardness. These wounds still haunt the people of Niger. Since independence in 1960, the construction and development of the Republic of Niger have taken a rather tortuous path. To this day, it has not yet shaken off the shadows of poverty and backwardness and ranks second to last in the United Nations Human Development Index. But the people of Niger have not lost faith or courage and continue to move forward. Based on the lessons learned from more than 40 years of construction and development since independence, they are now working hard to explore a path suitable for their own country to escape poverty and accelerate development. We believe that the future of the Republic of Niger, like the sun on its national flag, will shine with brilliance. P1-2
