The daughter of Emperor Altou, Turandot, is naturally beautiful and becomes the object of pursuit by many princes. Not only do these princes admire her beauty, but they also covet her father's throne and territory. Turandot, who appears cold and aloof, designs a "riddle game" to punish the princes who come to court her, both as a form of retribution and as a way to avenge her grandmother, who was brutalized by the Tartar invaders a century ago. She also makes a promise: whoever can solve all three riddles will marry her.
The Tartar prince Calaf, who is captivated by Turandot's beauty, solves the three riddles correctly, but Turandot, the princess, refuses to keep her promise. Thus, Calaf makes a deal with her: if she can name his name before dawn, he will give up the engagement and even his own life. The maid Liu, deeply in love with Calaf, refuses to reveal his name even under severe torture and ultimately takes her own life. Finally, Turandot comes to understand the true meaning of love and accepts Calaf.
