The daughter of Emperor Altou, Turandot, is naturally beautiful and becomes the object of pursuit by many princes. These princes are not only attracted to Turandot's beauty but also covet her throne and territory. Turandot, who appears cold and aloof, designs a "riddle" to punish the men who come to court her, both as a form of revenge for the suffering inflicted by the Tartar invaders a century earlier and as a way to avenge her grandmother. She also makes a promise: whoever can solve all three riddles will marry her.
The Tartar prince Calaf, who is captivated by Turandot's beauty, solves the three riddles correctly, but the princess refuses to keep her promise. Thus, Calaf makes an agreement with her: if she can say his name before dawn, he will renounce the marriage and even his own life. The maid Yuier, deeply in love with Calaf, refuses to reveal his name even under severe torture and takes her own life. Finally, Turandot comes to understand the true meaning of love and accepts Calaf.
