Northern Wei "Li Zhan Tomb Inscription," the full title of which is "Epitaph for Confucian Scholar Li Sheng," was carved in the first month of the Zhengshi era (508 AD) of the Northern Wei Dynasty. The stele is in the shape of an inverted (dǒu), with a height of 36.5 cm and a width of 43 cm. The surface of the stele measures 29 cm in height and 36.5 cm in width, with 16 lines of regular script, each containing 15 characters, arranged in a grid pattern. It was unearthed in Zanhuang, Hebei, in the year 2000. The calligraphy of this stele is rich and expansive, with dynamic and open structures. The characters occasionally contain errors, likely due to the brittle stone and the hasty carving. However, these imperfections further highlight the carefree and unrestrained charm of the style.
Eastern Wei "Lü Sheng Tomb Inscription," the full title of which is "Epitaph for Lü Sheng, the Interior Minister of Jiyang in the Later Wei Dynasty," was carved in the second month of the Wuding era (544 AD) of the Eastern Wei Dynasty. The stele has a height of 51.5 cm and a width of 52.5 cm, with 24 lines of regular script, each containing 24 characters. It was unearthed in Linzhang, Hebei, in the spring of 2000. The owner of the stele, Lü Sheng, styled Shixing, is mentioned in the attached biography of his son Lü Luohan in the "Book of Wei." The calligraphy of this stele is sharp and vigorous, with meticulous craftsmanship. The form and style of the characters closely resemble those of the "Zhang He’nu Tomb Inscription," as the two were created only a decade apart, possibly by the same calligrapher.
