The Tujia region in Hunan, Hubei, Chongqing, and Guizhou has been inhabited by ancestors of the Tujia people, the Ba people, as early as the pre-Qin period. After the unification of China by the Qin Dynasty, successive feudal dynasties established prefectures and counties in the area. During the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, it was part of the Tusi region. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China, He Long led Tujia and other ethnic groups in establishing the revolutionary base area of Hunan, Hubei, Chongqing, and Guizhou. After the founding of the PRC, the ethnic affairs departments at all levels in the Wuling region, in accordance with the Party's ethnic identification policy, restored the ethnic identity of over 8.02 million people as Tujia.
Following the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Wuling region was designated by the State Council as one of the 18 national poverty-stricken areas and included in the national western development program. Since the Sixteenth National Congress formulated the western development policy, in order to utilize and develop the tourism resources of the Tujia region and protect its cultural heritage, the author has compiled this first systematic travel book in China that promotes the history, culture, and scenic spots of the Tujia region, drawing on over 400 ethnic cultural tourism research articles published over the past 20 years.
