The Dark Night of Success
1. An interviewer rejected a young man because his voice didn’t meet the requirements for a broadcaster. The interviewer also told the young man that his unpleasantly long name would never allow him to become famous. This young man later became the "Millennium Actor" of Indian cinema, Aamir Khan.
2. In 1962, four young, inexperienced musicians nervously performed their newly written songs for the head of "Tee-Jay Records." The executives showed no interest in their music and refused to grant them a record deal. One even said, "We don’t like their voices. The guitar band will soon be a thing of the past." These four musicians formed the band "The Beatles."
3. In 1944, Emily Snively, the head of "Look at Me" modeling agency, told a girl who wanted to become a model—Norma Jean Baker—that she should "get a secretary job or just marry early." This girl later became known as Marilyn Monroe.
4. In 1954, a singer under "The Country Theater" was fired after her first performance. The owner, Jimmy Denny, told her, "Kid, you’re not going anywhere. Go home and drive a truck." This singer was Elvis Presley, known as the "King of Rock and Roll."
5. In 1940, a young inventor named Chester Carlson took his patent to over 20 companies, including some well-known ones. They all rejected him. In 1947, after being rejected seven times, a small company in Rochester, New York finally agreed to buy his patent—the Xerox machine. This small company later became Xerox.
6. A Black girl, the 20th of 22 children in her family, nearly died at birth due to premature delivery. At the age of four, she contracted pneumonia and scarlet fever, which left her left leg paralyzed. By the age of nine, she struggled to walk independently, metal leg braces. By the age of 15, she could barely walk normally, and the doctors called it a miracle. That same year, she decided to become a runner. She entered a race and finished last. In the following years, she always finished last in every race. Everyone encouraged her to give up, but she kept running. Until one day, she won a race. From then on, she kept winning until she dominated every competition. This Black girl was Wilma Rudolph, the "Black Gazelle," who won three Olympic gold medals.
Trust in Life
Life is full of coincidences, which also creates many opportunities. At the age of 16, she was just an ordinary girl, studying poorly, and hanging out with other girls who were already working. That year, she was in the second grade of junior high school, unsure of what her future held.
Before a mid-term exam, her close friend secretly pulled her aside and said, "I have the exam paper for this time." It turned out that another school had already taken the exam, and someone had told her that this was the same paper. It was a math exam, and she memorized it almost completely. If she had taken the exam as herself, she would have done well.
