Gong Duanjin: This is a collection of fictional tales, with eight segments corresponding to eight stories. The themes are mostly drawn from earlier vernacular novels, with some revisions and embellishments during adaptation. These works often depict folk customs, social realities, or family and marital life, showcasing the urban life and the spirit of the citizens in the Ming Dynasty. At the same time, these stories are typically full of intricate plots, vivid characters, and expressive language, making them highly readable. Occasionally, they reveal outdated ethical notions, superstitions, and sexual awareness prevalent in the urban society of that time, which readers should be mindful of. The book was banned as "obscene literature" during the Qing Dynasty.
