A few dry English sentences are not enough. Don't always put the purpose of reading in terms of improving English. Reading is primarily about absorbing knowledge, and in the process of absorbing knowledge, language is naturally absorbed as well. — Xu Guozhang
Thinking in English is an ideal that many English learners aspire to, as it is the foundation for expressing thoughts fluently in English. For Chinese students living in a non-English environment, it is indeed challenging to think partly or entirely in English, but it is not an unattainable goal. From my own experience in learning English, I have found that persistent extensive reading is one of the most effective ways to achieve this goal. — He Qixin (Vice President and Doctoral Supervisor of Beijing Foreign Studies University)
For elementary and intermediate English learners, I especially recommend English easy readers. The material should be simple and easy to understand, with a strong narrative element. The reading speed should be as fast as possible, and the more you read, the better. This is a proven method for learning English. — Hu Wenzhong (Professor of Beijing Foreign Studies University)
This book is a breakthrough work written by Lawrence based on his childhood and youth. The protagonist of the novel, Paul, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Morel, who fall in love at first sight at a ball and get married. However, Mr. Morel is a miner, while Mrs. Morel comes from the middle class. Their life philosophies are completely different. Facing her husband's aimlessness, Mrs. Morel feels her hopes shatter. Her disappointment, dissatisfaction, and resentment towards her husband lead her to pour all her love and hopes into her son. She first hopes for her eldest son, William, but he dies young. Then she turns her hopes to her second son, Paul, hoping he will rise above his circumstances and achieve her ideals. She loves her son, encourages him to become successful and enter high society, but she also controls his spirit, preventing him from falling in love with other women. This makes Paul confused and lost in his future romantic relationships. His relationship with his girlfriend Millan makes the young Paul experience spiritual suffering. However, like her mother, Millan also tries to spiritually possess Paul, making him feel suffocated. Later, they break up. Paul is also involved with a woman named Clara, who is separated from her husband. He finds physical satisfaction with her. But in the end, Clara ends her relationship with Paul and returns to her husband. In the end, Mrs. Morel passes away, and Paul and Millan also fail to reconcile. He remains alone, wandering, and continues his spiritual struggle.
