PETS Level 1 (B) is an auxiliary level of PETS Level 1, with slightly lower requirements. The purpose of establishing this level is to meet the needs of widespread popularization of daily English, so it places greater emphasis on oral communication and basic daily interaction. To meet the training and learning needs of the Level 1 (B) exam, the National English Level Test Teaching Material Writing Group has compiled this textbook based on the new examination syllabus formulated by the Ministry of Education. The textbook focuses on the spirit of quality education and competency-based learning, emphasizing communicative application and practical features. The textbook not only covers all grammar items, all communicative functions, and approximately 98% of the vocabulary in the Level 1 (B) syllabus but also appropriately expands some grammar and vocabulary knowledge, providing a bridge for examinees to transition to Level 1. This book covers multiple areas of daily communication, with communication levels in each area tailored to the actual needs of the examinee group. The book summarizes 16 communication topics, each as a unit. Each unit includes:
1. Dialogues: Based on each unit's communication topic, it contains 3-5 simple dialogues, which are novel, interesting, and highly practical. The dialogues cover the basic communicative expressions stipulated in the syllabus while also introducing new and trendy spoken English.
2. Texts: Authentic English original texts are selected as material, accompanied by cartoon illustrations, making the content lively, vivid, and visually engaging. The length of each text is between 40-120 words, generally serving as a supplement or extension to the dialogue content of the unit.
3. Vocabulary and Phrases: Covers approximately 98% of the vocabulary items in the Level 1 (B) syllabus; additional commonly used daily words not covered in the syllabus are supplemented, enabling examinees to learn more rich and practical sentence patterns and words. Appropriate expansion is provided for syllabus-excluded vocabulary, offering greater improvement opportunities for examinees with stronger learning abilities. Among the syllabus-excluded vocabulary, those marked with an asterisk () in each unit's vocabulary list are for memorization only and do not require further requirements. All vocabulary is provided with international phonetic symbols, part of speech, and Chinese definitions, making self-study and memorization more convenient.
4. Notes: Highlights important grammar and vocabulary in the unit, expands related communicative expressions, and uses shading to emphasize key examination points in the notes.
5. After-Class Exercises: Designed to address the communication topics and key content of each unit, allowing examinees to self-assess their understanding of the unit's key content. The examination formats are closely linked to real exams and also reflect the assessment of fundamental knowledge for the unit. To facilitate the learning of a wide range of examinees, the writing group has organized experts to provide a multimedia teaching CD-ROM for this textbook.
